چکیده

The objective was to quantify the influence of thinning, high pruning and slash management on crop tree stand growth in young even-aged stands planted silver birch (Betula pendula Roth). This study based two field experiments, aged six eleven years at initiation re-measured after eight years, respectively. Treatments included unthinned control, moderate thinning mainly from below (removing 28–33% standing volume), point favor 300 trees per ha with no elsewhere plot 16–25%), heavy leaving 600 evenly distributed potential future 64–75%). Slash (extraction or retention) applied heavily thinned plots. High removing 30–70% green crown carried out some plots ha, Stand volume increased increasing pre-treatment mean annual increment decreased intensity as compared control. LS-means estimates indicated a reduction for by 14%, 12% (combined pruning) 62%. However, youngest experiment, (without reduced 54%. Combining these results similar experiment Canada, (RedIv%) depending removal (RemV%), both expressed percentage quantified RedIv% = −23.67 + 1.16·RemV% (calibration range: 30–83%). For (large quantities slash), extraction resulted retention. instantaneous numeric average stem diameter thickest (D300) due 3.5, 15–21% 955–11% moderate, subsequent increase D300 during observation period 8.5%, 25 18%, In led unpruned an 30%. pre-selected intensity. plots, increasingly severity; 21% larger 3% pruned trees. As adverse side effect, only were risk windthrow intervention. oldest 95–21% damaged wind.

Effect of Polluted Soil and Fertilisation on Growth and Physiology of Silver Birch (Betula pendula Roth.) Seedlings

One-year-old seedlings of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) were grown in pots filled with a soil substrate that originated from an area polluted by a phosphate fertiliser factory and characterised by a high soil Al level and low Ca/Al ratio or with a substrate from an area regarded as free from toxic pollution. In addition the effect of fertilisation with a mixture of nutrients was evaluated...

Hormesis and Paradoxical Effects of Drooping Birch (Betula pendula Roth) Parameters Under Motor Traffic Pollution

Various plant indexes are used or recommended for bioindication. However, the nonmonotonic dose-response dependences (hormesis and paradoxical effects) of these indexes are insufficiently explored upon exposure to pollution. We studied the dependences of these Betula pendula indexes on the intensity of motor traffic pollution. Regression analysis did not reveal any dependence of chlorophyll and...

Genetic transformation of silver birch (Betula pendula) by particle bombardment.

We used in vitro callus and shoot cultures as target material for genetic transformation of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) by particle bombardment. Cultivation of in vitro shoot cultures before particle bombardment and a long selection period, combined with a high concentration of selective agent after bombardment, led to the production of transformed plantlets that were stable, and no esca...

Linkage map of birch, Betula pendula Roth, based on microsatellites and amplified fragment length polymorphisms.

The first genetic linkage map for silver birch, Betula pendula Roth, was constructed by using a pseudo-testcross mapping strategy and integration of linkage data from 3 unrelated 2-generation pedigrees. The map is based on the genetic inheritance and segregation of 82 amplified fragment length polyhmorphisms and 19 microsatellite markers, and was constructed by simultaneously comparing the perf...
